Have you been hearing about Summerween but not sure what it is? Read on to learn all about it!
What is Summerween?
If you’ve been around the internet lately, you’ve probably heard the term ‘Summerween’. So what exactly is it? Summerween is a whimsical holiday that combines the spooky fun of Halloween with the warmth and relaxation of summer. This unofficial celebration typically takes place on June 22, exactly 4 months before and after Halloween, though some people choose to celebrate it anytime during the summer months.
The concept of Summerween originated from the popular animated series “Gravity Falls,” created by Alex Hirsch. In the show, the fictional town of Gravity Falls celebrates this holiday, allowing residents to enjoy Halloween twice a year. Since the episode aired, fans of the show and Halloween enthusiasts have embraced the idea, turning it into a real-world celebration. Watch the episode here.
Why should you celebrate Summerween?
Um, because it’s fun of course! Other than that, it gives us a great way to get in the spooky spirit and helps you get through those hot summer months. It also works out great for us Halloween lovers because that means the stores start stocking their spooky decor even earlier than before! What’s better than walking into Home Goods or Michaels and seeing their newest Halloween items?
Ways To Celebrate Summerween
Ok, so now that you know what it is, how do you join in on the fun? Here are some great ways to incorporate a little spookiness into your summer:
- Decorate with a summer twist: Combine traditional Halloween decor with summer elements. Think pumpkins wearing sunglasses or skeletons lounging in beach chairs.
- Costume creativity: Create summer-themed Halloween costumes like zombie surfers or vampire lifeguards.
- Host a backyard BBQ with a spooky flair: Serve horror-themed snacks and drinks with tropical flavors.
- Organize outdoor activities: Plan a nighttime scavenger hunt or set up a scary movie screening under the stars.
- Jack-o’-melons: Carve watermelons instead of pumpkins for a refreshing summer alternative. (Pineapple is another great option!)
- Trick-or-treating with a twist: Exchange summer-themed treats, like salt water taffy, or small beach toys instead of candy.
Now that Summerween is becoming so popular, there are even local events popping up. Here is an example of a local event hosted in Utah this year! Can’t find one in your area? Sounds like it’s time to start your own!
